Parks & Recreation

Twelve magnificently maintained public parks are scattered throughout the city. A Country Club, two public golf courses, a municipal water park, and a host of recreational and athletic sites provide activities for all ages.

PARKS
McPherson has a number of very beautiful public parks which encompasses over 200 acres. The parks are maintained the year around by the Parks Department.

Challenger Park
300 East Kansas; two acres, four lighted tennis courts, lighted basketball/ice skating rink, restrooms.

Hess Park
Canterbury and Northview; two acres, picnic shelter, and children's playground.

Linnea Park
301 East Kansas; two acres, picnic shelter, playground, and drinking fountain.

Lakeside Park
Lake side and Kansas; 46 acres, cabin for rent, six picnic shelters, volleyball area, restrooms, bandshell, fishing, open fields, Swan Court Garden area, handicap playground equipment and city water park.

Memorial Park
200 West Kansas; two acres, gazebo, "We The People Monument", restrooms, fishpond, grape arbor, unique landscaping, Veteran memorials, and General McPherson monument.

Tallgrass Park
1001 Turkey Creek Drive; two playgrounds, gazebo, and 1/10 mile walking track.

Wall Park
Avenue A and Park Street; 60 acres, restrooms, six unlighted tennis courts, three lighted handball courts, baseball field, three softball diamonds, four picnic shelters, playground, fishing, exercise trails, skate park.

Wickersham Park
300 block of West Kansas; two acres, open field, no facilities.

600,000 gallons of FUN for all ages. It is a family, quality of life water experience. You can select from an assortment of activities; cruise the 500 foot lazy river, a giant water slide, deep diving area, 8 lane 50 meter pool, and a children's spray recreation area.

RECREATIONAL AREAS

McPherson State Fishing Lake

The McPherson State Fishing Lake is located in McPherson County and within 17 miles of McPherson. It has 46 surface acres of water. Surrounding the lake are 260 acres of campground and public use area. water clarity is usually very good, supporting fair to excellent populations of channel catfish, black bullhead, black crappie, redear sunfish, bluegill and large mouth bass. Firerings, grills and picnic tables are available for use by picnickers, campers, and fishermen. A self-guided nature trail is open year-round. (620) 628-4592

McPherson Valley Wetlands

The series of wetlands occurs in three main sections northwest of Hutchinson: the Big Basin, two miles west of the city of McPherson, the Little Basin adjoining the north shore of the Big Basin, and the Chain of Lakes, which run from one mile south of the Big Basin south of the McPherson County lline. These three areas are spread over approximately 126 square miles. At more than 100 acres, Inman Lake is the largest natural lake in Kansas. The Wetlands are managed by the Kansas Wildlife and Parks. The Wetlands are primarily for waterfowl and other hunting during the season and wildlife and bird viewing the rest of the year.

Maxwell Wildlife Refuge

Located six miles north of Canton, Kansas a 2,800 acre Wildlife Refuge with McPherson State lake on west side. A designated refuge and home to 200 head of bison and 50 head of elk. Tram tours are available every week-end starting on Memorial Day and continuing through October. This is your best chance to see the prairie, buffalo and elk, up close and personal. Special tours on wildflowers, bird life, and other topics are available by reservation. Campfire meals are also available.
